Are you disappointed with your own creative output? Do you feel boxed in by the expectations and judgments of others and yourself? There’s an easy answer. Become a different person!
For some people it’s as easy as writing under another name. Look at Stephen King, he has Richard Bachman to release some of his lesser works. He has said in interviews that some projects are just obviously Bachman projects. He writes them differently in his own head. Other people hide behind other names when they are afraid that someone close to them might judge them for what they write. With another persona, you can feel free to let loose!
Other people develop whole unique identities for different phases of their creative output. Look at David Bowie and the Ziggy Stardust character he played in his stage show. Even the Beatles tried it by pretending to be Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band rather than the Beatles.
Taking on another persona can be fun. You are free to be as terrible as you want with no consequences. You can even make a Facebook account for your new self, filling in all the information will give you a better idea of who you are. Once you know who you are, create for that person instead of yourself. If the results are bad, you can laugh as you do it and never show it to anyone.
If you can’t do it, be someone else!
